The island of Puerto Rico has seen a significant share of health care problems due to natural disasters that have ravaged the island in recent years. One of the main health care providers which have dedicated itself to improving the status of healthcare here is InnovaCare, Inc. The firm partners with local health systems to bring healthcare services to the locals. After Hurricane Maria destroyed the island’s infrastructures and food supplies, healthcare services were hindered, but InnovaCare subsidiary Medicare y Mucho Mas (MMM) was on hand to offer referrals and physicians with specialized care services.
MMM is Puerto Rico’s central Medicare Advantage health plans and offered counsel, care, and other services in the aftermath of the hurricane. Hurricane destroyed hospitals and added to the misery of poor health care conditions as people and professionals ditch the island for the mainland US. They opened a facility at Recargate to address specific healthcare needs such as drug management and disease prevention. They also offer emotional, recreation, exercises and educational seminars to Puerto Ricans. Health specialists on site give medical attention for mental health, depressive, grief and anxiety individuals especially the elderly.
InnovaCare set up mobile clinics in the wake of the Hurricane that served over 25,000 people. They offered supplies, performed home health visits and provided mental health support throughout Puerto Rico.
The healthcare care challenge in the island has been long present as the government programs of Medicaid and Medicare are underfunded in comparison to the Mainland. People in the mainland enjoy Medicare costs four times better than in Puerto Rico. Recently, InnovaCare Chief Administrative Officer, Penelope Kokkinides took part in a federal healthcare legislation discussion with president Trump among seven other women in a Women in Healthcare Panel, at the White House.
Also present was Center for Medicaid/Medicare Services (CMS) Administrator Seema Verma. Penelope Kokkinides pointed the $1 billion yearly cuts in Medicare Advantage funding to Puerto Rico as disproportional to regular reductions in the US. She was steadfast in her request to have more Medicare Advantage funding channeled to Puerto Rico InnovaCare, using its two subsidiaries that is PMC Medicare Choice and MMM Healthcare, to try and improve innovation, quality, sustainability and affordability of healthcare services in the Island.
InnovaCare Health efforts have been helped, and their recent concern with CMS has been fruitful as new and positive healthcare funding changes towards Puerto Rico. CMS efforts in improving Medicare Advantage funding will be a big boost for the island at these times.
